Originally ''Aberystwyth'' was most popular as a setting for Charles Wesley's hymn ''Jesus, Lover of My Soul''.〔(Hymnary.org )〕 In 1897 Enoch Sontonga composed the hymn ''Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika'' ("Lord Bless Africa" in Xhosa), setting it to ''Aberystwyth''.
